"Hey reader. Yes. You. Just a foreword; so put the corona bottle down, end the late night gaming session and open up your cerebral cortex to this. I don't know if you've noticed, but the Coup De Grace blog does things a bit differently here. Our review of Spec Ops: The Line will be disintegrated with laser precise accuracy into three divided reviews; and they include reviews of the single player, multiplayer, and co-op portions of Spec Ops: The Line. As an avid fan and participant in the video game industry -- as a writer and gamer, I realize how much online multiplayer (not so much local multiplayer) modes have blossomed over the years. Obviously, we can draw a lot of the present traditions from PC games -- an industry that glued us to online multiplayer in the first place. Anyone remember a little game called Counter Strike by Valve? So fast forward to 2013 and consoles have adopted all sorts of implementations to better integrate online services; from DLC, to multiplayer, co-op,...

Electronic Arts Blurs The Line Between Hollywood And Games With Battlefield 4

Added: 27.03.2013 12:18 | 4 views | 0 comments

Forbes - Electronic Arts-owned developer DICE used GDC 2013 to offer a glimpse into what next generation gaming will mean for gamers this fall. The Swedish developer showed off a live demo of Battlefield 4, which has been announced for PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. Its likely this sequel will also be coming to PlayStation 4 and the new Xbox, but EA has yet to confirm other platforms. Inside a packed AMC Metreon movie theater, hundreds of journalists, some analysts and Seattle Seahawks running back Marshawn Lynch watched as DICE played through an intense action sequence from the beginning of Battlefield 4s single player campaign. Watching this nearly 20 minute sequence on a giant movie theater screen was appropriate. In fact, if people happened to wander into the packed theater, theyd likely not have realized they werent watching a Hollywood blockbuster film. The lines being blurred between games and movies in new ways.

Violent games are creatively too easy, says Spec Ops writer

Added: 26.03.2013 23:49 | 14 views | 0 comments

Walt Williams says violent games not bad or wrong, just too easy; would like to see more hopeful characters written in the future.

writer Walt Williams believes violent games are, creatively speaking, too easy. Speaking today during a Game Developers Conference panel, Williams lamented the ubiquitous use of killing in many first-person shooters, saying such actions have become not only mundane, but also run-of-the-mill, and at times even used as filler.

"We're in an industry full of very intelligent, knowledgeable, and progressive people. It's getting harder and harder for us to play these games and to look at them critically and say, 'This is OK.' This makes sense, especially as we get older," Williams said. "I would like to see less violent games out there. Not because they're bad or wrong, but because I think creatively they're too easy."

Williams' talk was focused on contextualizing violence through narrative, using Spec Ops: The Line as an example. He said it was remarkable that Spec Ops: The Line ever came to market, given the experimental nature of the title.

"Honestly, the game was very much an experiment. One that, to this point, I'm kind of really surprised that it ever made it to the shelves," Williams said.

Williams said he is unsure where writing for shooters should go in the future, but suggested that creating more hopeful characters would be a good start.

"Where do you go after doing a game like this? How can you make another shooter#133;that leaves your characters arguably alive? I think we need to get to a point where we can move back to maybe trying to write characters#133;that are a bit more hopeful. I think that might be a good first step," he said.
